What's in your pack

Unfortunately, I am going to add pepper spray for when I go alone.  I hate to think there may be a need but last time I was nervous out in the middle of nowhere by myself.  I also carry a whistle as someone suggested awhile back (doesn't take much room or weight).  Could be handy if hurt or need help.

I was interested to see this post--I had the same feeling today as I hunted in a deeply wooded, somewhat isolated area. I was a woman alone and a man came onto the trail where I had stopped to check my clues. He was just hiking, too, but it gave me pause. Besides, I could have used the pepper spray on the bugs! Good suggestion and it never hurts to be prepared. Cowpost

If you are going to bother carrying pepper spray, I would suggest
something like bear guard or one of the other sprays marketed for
protection against bears. Hopefully no one will have to find out how
effective they are in that regard, but they are the strongest pepper
sprays available to the public and certainly would work quite well on
any other human or animal attacker. You can usually find these types
at sporting goods stores. I always carry a canister because I often
hike in remote areas alone where firearms are not allowed. Down in
Florida we have black bears, but I usually worry more about stumbling
upon wild boars or gators in marshy areas.

Great tip--I did not even KONOW there was bear guard! That was my main
reason for carrying pepper spray with me in the northwoods--there are a lot
of black bears up there. I did not really have a lot of faith in the pepper
spray working on bears, but it was all I could think of (not owning a gun).

I would also suggest that anyone who plans to hike off well marked
trails consider a basic gps device. They are not necessary for many
types of hiking but can save you a lot of grief if you get lost off a
trail system. One of the best features that they have is
automatically tracking your wanderings so you can easily go back the
way you came. I have always carried a compass, but one reason I
recently got a gps was the amount of time (and sweat) it took me to
get "unlost" in forest and make it back to my vehicle. Basic ones
(e.g. Garmin etrex or Magellan 315) are just over a hundred dollars
and worth every cent if you are lost off a trail system.
